From Wikipedia..
The film opens with psychologist Chris Kelvin (Donatas Banionis) walking in the land around his father's house, the day before he is to leave for the space station orbiting the remote, liquid-covered, planet-like object called Solaris. After decades of study, the scientific mission there has made little progress in understanding its subject, and has fallen into crisis. Kelvin is being sent to evaluate the situation and determine the future of the outpost.

It would have been nice to WARN people that this is the commented version without subtitles, making it impossible to actually watch and enjoy - if the site it was uploaded to allowed bigger download chunks and resumable downloads, such as Megaupload, the consequent waste of bandwidth would have been less aggravating...

I hope you can understand my frustration, if you have a solution feel free to post it up.... Not everyone has unlimited bandwidth!!!

I just wanted to apolgize for my anger... I did find a way around the director's comments, it is to use BS Player. It allows you to select which audio stream to play.

Problem solved!

As for the movie, it is a beautiful print of the classic, which I saw first in the early 70s... It is dated a bit and very slow paced, but it fits the subject perfectly and it still gave me shivers, more than 30 years after my first viewing.

For those who have never seen the movie, it has a very strong russian tragic feel to it, which Soderbergh's 2002 version doesn't convey. In that respect, I feel this version is superior. This is not to say Soderbergh's version is poor, quite the contrary, it is better in many respects, better built as a story, better made as a movie, and easier to understand, whereas Tarkovsky's version is full of enigmas, hidden meanings, meanings that reflect perfectly the heavy communist atmosphere of the era.

A MUST SEE for science fiction fans and anyone who like Films d'Auteur.

Thank you so much for making it available!
